Kinmen Island, historically a frontline of civil and cold wars, is now a popular tourist destination, where military sites and ruins are transformed into destinations to capture the perfect tourist-image. My a-kong (阿公, grandfather) was born and lived in Kinmen in the early 20th century before immigrating to Malaysia. On a recent visit, I was interested to film the sunset over Kinmen Bridge (completed in 2022) as viewed from Huxia Seawall, an old military observation post and now popular tourist lookout. During filming, tourists (mainly from Taiwan mainland or China) arrived and left the small carpark area after taking photos of themselves in front of Kinmen Bridge. While I was there, a photographer and a small crew arrived to choreograph a photoshoot of two young actors, posing as lovers, holding hands, kissing and skipping in front of the iconic bridge.
As the sky turns from brighter to darker evening hues, car lights can be seen crossing the bridge, as locals go about their lives despite the interruptions of tourism. Visible between these two screens are both Leiyu Island (Little Kinmen) and the city Xiamen. These two distant spaces form a moving horizon line and backdrop to the two lovers, where the romance of a consumer-present is imagined onto a landscape already loaded with legacies of war and catastrophe.
